Basilica of Our Lady of La Soledad (the Solitude), Oaxaca City

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Solitude "La Soledad", declared the patron virgin of Oaxaca in 1909, is one of the most prominent buildings due to its artistic construction and the devotion expressed by people from Oaxaca, faithful Mexican and foreigner people.

The church was rose at the place where the image of the virgin of the Solitude appeared, inside of a box of shoes in 1543. After some extensions, the temple was finished in 1690 with donations of archdeacon Don Pedro Otalora y Carbajal. it was honored as a basilica in 1959.

The facade is truly a work of art because of its sculptures and fine carvings. At the main entrance, to the right side, a small rock can be seen, this is the place where the box which contained the image was opened.

The museum next to the basilica displays the history of the apparition and many liturgical items.
The ex convent, designed by the Bethlehemitian friar Sebastian de San Felipe, hosts nowadays the town hall of Oaxaca city.
