Molinillos from Sierra Juarez

The Molinillos are manual grinders carved in wood and used all over the state to prepare the delicious chocolate beverage.

In Santa Catarina Ixtepeji in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, local people elaborate grinders made of Aile wood, the main characteristic of this kind of wood is that it does not adds flavour to liquids. As we all know, a good chocolate's taste is very appreciated and, because these manual grinders are used to grind chocolate bars while boiling milk, not every type of wood can be used at it.

The forests of La Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, also known as Sierra Juarez, have beautiful settings and programs to conserve them. Local communities work in sustainable projects such as making handcrafts and products of the lumber. Molinillos are sold at any market in Oaxaca city, just ask for them and, at the same time, you will be supporting these communities from the cool and evergreen Sierra Juarez.
